KANGOL STILL MAKING NOISE!

KANGOL STILL MAKING NOISE!

The latest Band of the Hawk release, Kangol, finds the collective dropping their strongest lyrics while retaining the languid, disconnected groove listeners have come to identify as classic BOH. That sound, the loop-driven, bottom-of-the-closet beat tapestry (provided by producer/MC Noah Archangel), is perfected here with vocal samples, skit interludes and instrumentation woven to seamless effect (for Noah's best output, check the instrumental Levitikush from his Maschine Wars release last year). His approach is minimum input/maximum result, as the tracks give fellow MC's appropriate room to fit verses in every pocket without altering flow or compromising the subject matter.

The MC's shine here, as their hardest observations are countered with witty self-deprecation and doses of wild humor. King taunts "I'm musically high/never cursed or got drunk/you niggas ain't rapping/just mumbling junk" over Downtown Friday Night's fierce Funkadelic sample. The group's strongest lyricist, King's delivery is representative of the album's wide-ranging appeal. His is the group's gateway flow, as the other MC's enter and exit joints primarily anchored by the his bars. It's a formula with a high rate of success, as brother MC's Noah, Spear Chucka, Whoa Vada, P.Ey3 & STX meet the challenge, tossing bon mots like "back it up to the side of the house with the funnel cut/So I can swim in it like Donald Duck" or "Stomp and stone ya/I'm fucking pneumonia" with an off-the-cuff casualness that feels improvised.

The rumor mill abounds with talk of 2019 being The Band of the Hawk's final recording year. Let's hope that's just talk. Kangol's achievement lies beyond the crossroads of creativity. It's artistry represents a possible new path, not a conclusion.

“One Time” // K’NO drops certified trap banger for the streets

Why they always fuckin’ with me? No, I don’t give a fuck ‘bout One Time!” Since the reign of T-Pain, the city of Tallahassee has been starved of a star. Places such as Broward County and Miami have been the focus-point of Florida Hip-Hop for years now, leaving T-Town silently in the shadows. That is until K'NO dropped. Although the rapper is now based out of Los Angeles, he represents Tallahassee whole-heartedly; using his savage 2019 single, “ONE TIME”, to cast some rays back on his Gunshine home. Certainly, a star resides in this lyricist, capable of ascribing another face to Tallahassee’s growing list of greats. Only difference between K'NO, and the autotune icon before him, is that this emcee’s artistry hardly caters to the radio. Over hats, snares, and 808s, K'NO is inexplicably cutthroat. His bars are riddled with the ruthless realities of Tallahassee’s streets, matched with clever metaphors regarding the life he lives within them. “ONE TIME” is not a single detail shy of the grittiness, swagger and grime overtaking other areas of Florida. In fact, it may be even better, given that it pumps with an energy only K'NO can accord. This record will be dropping on all platforms May 23rd, and an album will be following it as soon as Miso Rich Entertainment gives the word. Until then, you can catch K'NO’s “ONE TIME” on Youtube; and watch this T-Town talent’s numbers quickly climb.

“Dues” // Godspeed2 channels classic hiphop with new 6-track EP

Detroit native Godspeed2 presents his debut EP titled, Dues, featuring six exclusive tracks that officially introduces him to the world as an influential emcee. For the album, the rap artist, poet and published author channels the energy of some of his favorite artist as a way of paying homage to them. Throughout Dues, he addresses an array of critical topics such as inner-city violence, intra-cultural struggle, bigotry, hypocrisy, politics, dancing, partying, sex, and love. The interesting thing about the EP is how Godspeed2 opens up a dialogue about issues plaguing the world without dismissing or condemning them, a tough feat for an emcee fresh out the gate. Highlights on the album include the jazzy, conscious opener “In The D,” and the bouncy, introspective “The Night.” A track worth mentioning is the subtly explicit “Vibrations” where GodSpeed2 goes in-depth about an intimate encounter over production that has a big feel and even bigger hook delivered by featured guest, The Remedy. To support Godspeed2's latest album effort, stream Dues on all digital platforms and be on the lookout for his upcoming follow-up project, Afraid of the Dark, coming soon.

“Switch Up” // OOOAndre drops dope modern-trap banger

There is always a diamond in the ruff. For Burnsville, Minnesota, the multifaceted collective, On Our Own, is precisely that jewel; and summer 2019 may be their defining, shining moment. At least as far as one of their member’s, OOOAndre, latest release can measure; for, “Switch Up” is a modern-trap gem worthy of an imminent crowning. Although the Midwestern crew are well-versed in both R&B and Hip-Hop, “Switch Up” leans ostensibly on their thunderous, trap potential. It is a quintessential banger of today’s sound; fueled by pummeling 808s, invigorating rhythm, and OOOAndre’s unique, yet befitting flow. Obviously, he is the man OOO can go to for a irresistible hit. The way this Gopher State talent maneuvers through the beat simply exudes effortlessness; making “Switch Up” likely a natural phenomenon for ‘Dre. If that is the case, there are tons of records just as potent as this club-ready anthem, hidden within the On Our Own archives, just waiting to be dropped. The moment they are, following the promised success of “Switch Up”, the diamond will no longer be in the ruff. It will be crowning princes as they become kings of the new-age, Hip-Hop scene.
